The Search Landscape Has Shifted: Optimizing Your Website for AI Search Engines (GEO vs. SEO)

Traditional SEO was built around one job: convince a search engine's ranking algorithm to place your page as high as possible in a list of links. That job hasn't disappeared. But an increasing share of searches now end with an AI-generated summary that answers the question directly — and getting cited or referenced inside that summary is a related, but genuinely different, discipline. That's what "Generative Engine Optimization," or GEO, refers to.

How GEO Differs From Traditional SEO

  • Citation, not just ranking — the goal shifts from "appear in position one" to "be one of the sources the AI summary actually pulls from and names"
  • Clarity over keyword density — AI systems tend to favor content that answers a question directly and unambiguously over content stuffed with repeated search terms
  • Structured data matters more — clean schema markup, clear headings, and well-organized factual content make it easier for an AI system to extract and attribute a specific claim to your page
  • Freshness and specificity — vague, evergreen-sounding content is less useful to cite than content with specific, current, checkable facts

What This Means Practically

It doesn't mean abandoning the fundamentals of good SEO — fast pages, clean structure, genuine expertise, real backlinks. Most of that still matters and still helps. What it adds is a second layer: writing content in a way that directly and clearly answers the specific question a person is likely to ask, with structured data that makes the facts easy to extract, rather than burying the answer in marketing language.

A Practical Starting Point

  • Answer the question in the first two sentences, then elaborate — don't make a reader (or an AI system) dig for the direct answer
  • Use structured data (schema markup) for anything factual: prices, hours, locations, services offered
  • Write in clear, declarative sentences rather than vague marketing phrasing — AI systems extract facts more reliably from direct statements
  • Keep information current and be explicit about dates, since specificity is part of what makes a source worth citing

SEO and GEO aren't competing strategies — they're overlapping ones, built on the same foundation of a fast, well-structured, genuinely useful website. The difference is in the finishing touches: writing for direct extraction, not just for ranking.

How to Tell If It's Working

Unlike traditional SEO, where rank tracking tools give a clear number, measuring GEO performance is still evolving. The most direct signal available today is simply asking the AI systems your customers are likely to use the exact questions your content answers, and checking whether your site gets cited or referenced in the response. It's manual, and imperfect, but it's the closest thing to a rank check this discipline currently has.

A Common Misconception Worth Correcting

Some businesses hear "AI search is changing everything" and conclude traditional SEO no longer matters. That's not accurate — AI-generated summaries are still often built from the same crawled, indexed web that traditional search ranks. A page that doesn't rank well in traditional search is also less likely to be surfaced or cited by an AI summary, because the AI system still has to find and trust the page first. GEO is additive to good SEO, not a replacement for it.

What to Do This Quarter

Rather than treating GEO as a separate project, fold it into whatever content work you're already doing. When writing or revising a page, add a direct, plainly-worded answer near the top before the more detailed explanation underneath. Add or update structured data for anything factual — prices, hours, locations. These are small adjustments layered onto normal content maintenance, not a new initiative requiring its own budget and timeline.
